Premature Grey Hair Causes: 9 Reasons & What Helps

Written by URoots Editorial Team | Medically reviewed by Dr. Ajay, MBBS, QHT Clinic

You found a grey hair strand while hairstyling one day, and then found a few more. You are 24, and it feels far too early to see your hair turning grey. A temporary dye can conceal the colour, but it does not change why new strands are growing without pigment.

Early greying can have several possible causes, and identifying the likely cause helps determine what to do next. It can affect self-esteem, cause distress, and become a sensitive issue, especially in young individuals. In people of Asian origin, including Indians, greying before age 25 is considered premature. Some causes of premature grey hair show up in a routine blood test. Others were written into your genes long before the first white strand appeared, and no oil or tablet rewrites them.

This guide walks through all nine ways QHT Clinic doctors reason through them in consultation, and it is honest about which greys can regain colour and which have settled in.

If the white strands arrived alongside thinning or extra hair fall, the 2-minute URoots hair test is a calm place to start.

Why is my hair turning grey early?

Hair can turn grey when pigment-producing cells inside the follicle become depleted or lose their ability to produce melanin. Family history is one of the strongest predictors. Low vitamin B12, an underactive thyroid, smoking, stress and some medicines push the timeline forward, and only some of these are correctable.

  • Early means: before 25 in Asians, Indians included
  • Strongest driver: family history
  • Worth testing: vitamin B12, folate and thyroid function, as your doctor advises
  • Potentially correctable: nutritional deficiencies, smoking-related risk, and medicine-related greying
  • Rarely reversible: long-standing, inherited grey

What Happens Inside A Hair That Turns White

Every dark strand on your head gets its colour as it grows. The process is called melanogenesis: synthesis of pigment, melanin. Human hair has two types of melanins: black-brown pigment eumelanins present in black and brown hair, and the yellow or red pheomelanin present in auburn and blonde hair.

Pigment cells called melanocytes sit at the base of the follicle and provide melanin to the growing hair. Hair follicle melanogenesis is under cyclical control and coupled with the hair growth cycle. Melanocytes in the hair bulb become less active, and pigment production shuts down towards the end of the hair cycle.

Premature greying may reflect the early depletion of the melanocyte stem-cell reservoir, with genetic and environmental factors influencing this process. Excess reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules that can damage the cells, contribute to a state known as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can also be influenced by factors such as UV exposure, pollution, inflammation, and psychological stress. A reservoir of melanocyte stem cells helps replenish pigment-producing cells. When this reserve becomes depleted, new hair may grow with little or no pigment.

Doctors call it premature greying of hair when this begins before 20 in white populations, before 25 in Asians, and before 30 in Africans.

The people most shaken at a QHT consultation are seldom the ones with the most grey. They are the ones who found it a decade before their parents did.

A white hair is not necessarily a damaged or “dead” hair. It is a hair that has grown with little to no melanin.

9 premature grey hair causes, and where each one hides

The reasons for early grey hair stack up, so our doctors look in four places instead of chasing one answer.

Causes You Inherit

1. Family History

Genetics is one of the strongest predictors of premature greying, and can influence when greying begins. Ask your parents when they first started going grey before looking for other explanations. In an Indian study of 52 people who greyed before 20, 75% had a family history. Researchers tied greying to IRF4, a gene involved in pigmentation. Genes set the stage. They do not write every line.

2. Autoimmune Medical Condition

Certain autoimmune conditions have been associated with premature greying. Premature hair greying has also been reported in association with pernicious anemia, certain rare syndromes such as Book’s syndrome, and premature-aging syndromes such as Progeria. It has also been reported in some people with Down syndrome.

Causes That Show Up On A Blood Report

3. Low vitamin B12, folate or biotin.

Several studies have investigated associations between vitamin B12, folate, biotin, vitamin D and premature hair greying. These nutrients are involved in various biological processes and can also disrupt melanin production, but an association between low levels and premature greying does not necessarily mean that deficiency directly causes the loss of hair pigment.

4. An underactive thyroid.

Thyroid dysfunction may affect hair growth and pigmentation and has been associated with premature greying in some studies. It can interfere with the synthesis and distribution of melanin in hair, which can affect the pigmentation of hair strands and result in a grey appearance of hair. Some studies have also reported an association between autoimmune thyroid disorders and premature greying.

5. Low copper.

Low copper levels affect tyrosinase activity, an enzyme involved in melanin production. Without enough copper, melanin synthesis is stalled, leading to premature greying of hair. Some studies have reported lower copper and calcium levels in people with premature greying, although the clinical significance of these findings remains uncertain.

Causes in Your Daily Routine

6. Smoking

The prevalence of premature hair greying in smokers is high. In one study, smokers were 2.5 times more likely to have premature greying before age 30 than non-smokers. The researchers point to oxidative damage in pigment cells. The available data is very limited, so the exact relationship is not fully understood. One proposed explanation is that smoking increases oxidative stress, which may damage melanin-producing cells.

7. Stress.

Research suggests a possible relationship between psychological stress and premature greying of hair. The key mechanistic study was conducted in mice, and human evidence remains limited. Acute stress leads to loss of pigment-producing cells in hair follicles. During the fight-or-flight response, the body releases norepinephrine, which can affect the melanocyte stem cells around the hair follicle. Without stem cells to create new pigment, the hair turns white or grey.

8. Weight and metabolic health.

An association between premature greying and metabolic risk factors, including obesity and low HDL cholesterol, has been reported. The proposed explanation is that metabolic disturbances may increase oxidative stress, which could affect melanocytes. Among adults in their 20s, being overweight and having two or more metabolic risk factors, such as a wide waist or elevated fasting sugar, were each independently associated with premature greying.

Causes in the Medicine Cabinet

9. Certain medicines.

Chloroquine, interferon-alpha and imatinib are among the drugs associated with greying. Here the news is good: medicine-related greying may improve after the causative drug is stopped or adjusted, although recovery is not guaranteed. That decision belongs to the doctor who prescribed it, never to you alone.

Your genes play a major role in when greying can start. Nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions and lifestyle factors may influence how fast it arrives.

Can Grey Hair Turn Dark Again?

Whether grey hair can regain colour depends largely on the underlying cause and how recently the greying occurred. The table below summarises what is known about reversibility for each major cause.

CauseCan the colour return? The honest verdict
Family historyNo proven wayColouring is a personal choice
Low B12 or folateColour restoration is not reliably establishedCorrect the deficiency under your doctor’s guidance

SmokingReversal not establishedQuitting reduces continued exposure to a known risk factor
StressOccasionally reported in recently greyed hairsAct early

Grey Hair in 20s: What To Do Next

Plucking is not a plan. Our doctors work in this order instead.

  1. Map your family timeline: When did each parent start greying? It changes how a doctor reads your case.
  2. Ask your doctor about blood tests: Vitamin B12, folate, and thyroid function have been investigated in Indian studies and may be worth discussing based on your symptoms and medical history. Take supplements only as directed by your doctor.
  3. Count smoking as a hair decision: Few risks here are fully in your hands.
  4. Manage Stress: Recently greyed hairs are the ones with a chance.
  5. Colour with care: p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), used in oxidative hair dyes, is the most common allergen behind hair dye dermatitis. If colouring has ever made your scalp itch or swell, tell your dermatologist before the next salon visit.

See a dermatologist sooner if

  • White hair grows from a patch where the skin has also lost colour, a sign of possible vitiligo.
  • Greying started soon after a new medicine
  • Greying began before 20, or arrives with thinning and heavier hair fall

Early greying is a question to investigate properly once. Not a battle to fight strand by strand.

URoots Care Routine for Premature Greying of Hair

Early greying often runs in families, and no bottle can rewrite your genes. Worth hearing before you spend chasing black hair.

Your attention is better spent on the factors that can potentially be addressed. Among the factors discussed above, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, smoking, and medication-related greying are worth addressing when they are identified.

If your doctor finds dietary gaps, the deficiency needs direct correction. URoots Max Cyclical Therapy provides 21 nutrients across the weekly cycle as nutritional support. If long stretches of pressure sound familiar, URoots Calm Mind is a daily tablet with ashwagandha, brahmi, jatamansi and tagar, formulated to support relaxation and restful sleep. Neither changes hair colour nor replaces prescribed treatment.

Nutrient gaps can thin hair too, as our guide on vitamin deficiencies behind hair fall explains.

You cannot choose your genes. You can choose to find out whether they are the whole story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can vitamin B12 deficiency cause grey hair?

Low B12 is one of the most consistent findings in Indian studies of early greying. Patients who greyed before 20 had lower B12, folate and biotin than healthy controls. A blood test can identify whether your B12 level is low, and correction should follow your doctor's advice.

At what age is grey hair considered premature?

For people of Asian origin, including Indians, greying counts as premature when it starts before 25. The cut-off is 20 for white populations and 30 for people of African origin. If greying first begins at 27 in an Asian population, it is generally outside the commonly used definition of premature greying.

Can stress really turn your hair grey?

In mice, stress depleted pigment stem cells within days through a nerve signal. In people, one study tracking single hairs found some greyed during stressful periods and regained colour when stress eased. Their finding suggests recovery is likeliest in hairs that greyed recently.

Can premature grey hair be reversed naturally?

In narrow cases. Medicine-related greying may improve when the causative drug is adjusted or stopped under medical supervision, although recovery is not guaranteed. Inherited, long-standing grey has no proven treatment. No oil or home remedy has proven otherwise.
